Detroit Sucks T-Shirt

Looming large in the Lester Bangs mythology, the origins of the “Detroit sucks!” battle-cry are speculated by some to be Chicago Blackhawks hockey fans, and by others to be a 1960s campaign begun in Detroit, itself.

Bangs moved to Detroit in 1971 to work at CREEM, and hunkered down for five years, growing to detest Detroit as much as he begrudgingly loved it, calling it both “rock’s only hope,” and “home of the world’s ugliest people.”
